The Personnel Committee and the Deacon Ministers of First Baptist Church recommend that we call Rev. Andy Shorthill as our next Minister of Youth and Missions. Andy and Janine married 28 years ago. They have one daughter, Emily, a sophomore at the University of North Georgia. It was Janine who was instrumental in bringing Andy to Christ.
Soon after his decision to become a Christian, he became involved in ministry as a youth group team leader and Sunday school teacher. He served as Youth Pastor for ten years in a volunteer capacity.
At Cross Pointe Church, Andy directed children's worship for grades 1-5 for five years, preparing and presenting weekly life lessons and games. He created the X-Factor program based on 1 Timothy 4:12, which developed high school students to serve in the children’s ministry area.
He developed and directed Merge, a discipleship ministry for fifth and sixth graders. He served as a lay leader/director/teacher at Cross Point Church in Duluth for seven years.
Outside of his work with youth, Andy has led adult Sunday School classes and been involved with Men’s ministry. He directed Dr. James Merritt’s Men’s Conference for two years.
While doing all of this ministry, Andy had a day job. From 2000 to 2011 he was the Founder/ President of ScanSouth, an imaging and software company. During this time, he also served as Vice President to ScanSouth’s parent company, Hartrampf Engineering, and Architecture. Before that, he had IT roles with other companies.
However, while these jobs adequately paid the bills, they were not fulfilling a calling which Andy had been feeling for many years, a call to full-time Christian ministry.
Andy quit his job and spent five years as the Student Pastor at First Baptist Church in Oakwood, Georgia. While there, he also served as Administrative Pastor/Associate Pastor during an interim period (11 months) when the church was without a pastor.
Andy is an outdoorsman. He enjoys camping with his family and friends. He enjoys fly fishing, hunting and playing golf. Andy’s daughter, Emily is currently co-directing the musical Annie at The Historic Holly Theater in Dahlonega. Somehow, Andy now finds himself committed to several ensemble roles in the play.
Since the production runs the first three weekends of December, we are having to be creative in getting Andy on our campus. No worries though, he and his family have already worshipped with us twice. (I hope you were nice.)
Andy will meet with our youth and their parents at 9:30 A.M. in the Body Shop on December 9 and he will teach youth Sunday school that morning before he leaves for Dahlonega.
He will be present for the Christmas banquet on Wednesday 12. He will also be back to meet people during Sunday school on December 16, before having to leave at 11:00 A.M. for his last performance in Dahlonega.
We will vote on calling Andy at the end of the morning worship service on December 16.
Members of our Youth Committee and youth group have already met Andy, Janine, and Emily and are very excited about his ministry.
Currently, the Shorthills reside in Lawrenceville and hope to move to Jefferson eventually. Janine works as a Lead Charge Analyst at Gwinnett Medical Center.
